What is Light Therapy and How Can I Benefit From It?
The FDA has approved Red Light Therapy for a variety of uses.
This has sent a massive ripple effect through natural health circles, which have long advocated for the use of light therapy for circulation, cell regeneration and improving oxygen saturation in the skin.
Some research suggests this light can naturally boost collagen production, increase melatonin, stimulate the lymphatic system, improve recovery time, decrease inflammation of the skin, treat arthritis, treat degenerative joints, hair loss, healing wounds and reducing fat cells.
What does light therapy do?
Different wavelengths of the visible light spectrum correspond to different colors of LED light and penetrate the skin to different depths. Depending on how deeply they penetrate, LED lights can have different biological effects. Experts believe that red LED light acts on cells in the skin known as fibroblasts. These fibroblasts play a role in production of collagen, a protein that makes up a large part of connective tissue and helps the skin to recover when it’s harmed. Not all red light devices are created equally.
How can this benefit me?
Red Light. This is the most penetrating light which is why it can be helpful in skin cell regeneration (anti-aging) and improving oxygen content in the blood by stimulating circulation.
Blue Light. This therapy can be used to treat the most superficial areas of the skin and we’ve seen excellent results from patients with mild to severe acne.
Yellow Light. This therapy can be a helpful addition to treating bruising, rosacea, spider veins and skin inflammation.
What other things can it be used for?
Emerging evidence suggests that light therapy can be used to treat neuropathy! While research is still ongoing, this is very encouraging news for patients who want relief outside of traditional pharmaceutical intervention. Especially when paired with acupuncture, another studied and effective tool for relieving neuropathy pain– light therapy might have a wonderful impact on quality of life.
Pairing light therapy with other treatments like acupuncture and micro-needling can assist with the treatments, add extra benefits and provide a holistic healing environment.
Plus, many of our patients report feeling zen, calm and less anxious when receiving light therapy treatment. Give your body and eyes a break from the harsh light of 21st century living, and just let the rays of light boost your mood!
