The #1 Health Risk for Women and What We Can Do to About It

I treat a majority of women in my Charlotte, NC Functional Medicine Clinic. Many of us are unaware that Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. That’s approximately one woman every minute! The good news is 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events can be prevented with education and a few lifestyle changes that help with improving women’s health naturally.

Here are some of the key symptoms:

  • Dull, heavy to sharp chest pain or discomfort
  • Jaw/neck/throat pain or pain in upper abdomen or back
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath

Some of us may have no symptoms at all or complain of unusual fatigue, insomnia, indigestion or anxiety in the month leading up to a heart attack. Emotional stress can play a role in triggering heart attack symptoms in women.

What we can do to improve women's health:

  • Manage your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Blood sugar levels creep up slowly as we age, causing metabolic imbalance and slowing our circulation down.
  • Regular physical activity/exercise. Do something you enjoy!
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Avoid extreme dieting or the constant ups/downs. Work with us, the right health coaching can help show you real ways that will work for you in the long-term.
  • If your smoking, please stop! This increases your risk to many illnesses. If you need help, contact us for more information. There’re many great resources out there to stop successfully.

Functional/Eastern Medicine can help with improving women's health:

  • Know your numbers before they’re out of lab range. We perform an in-depth comprehensive look at many panels to see the health/function of your whole body. Seeing these results will help me explain what’s happening, begin putting the pieces back together and finding the underlying root cause of symptoms.
  • High quality supplements and herbs can be extremely helpful in the healing process but working with an expert who knows what supplements should be taken, when, how long and in what steps.
  • Acupuncture therapy has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety. For many of us, this is a great place to start. Better stress management can lead to better sleep, more energy, healthier digestion and less inflammation. Once stress is under control it’s amazing what you can achieve!
